a) a is used before a word beginning with a consonant.
b) an is used before a word beginning with a vowel.
Vowels and consonants were discussed in Lesson 25, Phonic Pack for Parents One.
Revision: Read the sentences on page 7.
1. Read the following sentences.
I can see an egg.
I can see an elf.
I can see an ant.
I can see an elephant.
I can see an umbrella.
I can see an orange.

2. Pick up a green pencil. Look back at the sentences and trace around each word that says an. As you trace around each word, read it.
3. Think up a sentence with the word an in it. Say the sentence to your tutor before you print it on the lines.
4. Glue pages 8 and 9 into your scrapbook.
5. Challenge: Can you read the following sentences?
Point to each word as you read.
I can see the sun.
I can see the teddy.
I can see the bus.
I can see the horse.
I can see the chick.
