See the …

1) This lesson introduces the words ‘See’ and ‘the’.

2) Notice that the word ‘see’ with a capital letter looks like this ‘See’, and without a capital letter it looks like this, ‘see’.

3) Where would you find the word ‘See’ with a capital letter?
(at the beginning of a sentence).

4) Trace over and then write the word ‘See’, with a capital letter and then without a capital letter.

See see .

5) Pick up a red pencil. Look at the sentences on page 4. Put a ‘fence’ around each word that says See. Every time you put a fence around a word, read it. Notice that the word See always is made written with the letters ‘s-e-e’.

6) Notice that the word ‘the’ with a capital letter looks like
this ‘The’, and without a capital letter it looks like this,
‘the’.

7) Where would you find the word ‘The’ with a capital
letter?
(at the beginning of a sentence).

8) Trace over and then write the word ‘The’, with a capital
letter and then without a capital letter.

9) Pick up a blue pencil. Look at the sentences on page 4. Draw a fence around each word that says the. Every time you put a fence around the word, read it. Notice that the word the is always made up with the letters ‘t-h-e’.

10) Point to each word and read the sentences.

11) Read the sentences again. This time instead of pointing to each word separately, let your finger ‘flow’ from left to right as you read.

12) If you do not know the last word in the sentence, and you can’t sound it out, look at the sound the word begins with and use the picture clue to help you.

13) Glue page 4 into your scrapbook. Read the sentences
as fluently as you can.

Note to tutor: (this applies to all lessons when tracing around words)

Drawing around the word encourages two outcomes:
a) the child realises that the word is always made up using the same letters and is learning to recognise the word.
b) it emphasises the shape of the word and so helps the child recognise the word.

While drawing around the word the pencil should follow the ‘shape’ of the word.

e.g

Word Hunt: Look at your favourite story books and see if you can find the words ‘see’ and ‘the’ printed there. Do the words have capital letters or not?
