1. This lesson introduces the word ‘what’.
2. Trace over the word ‘What’ with a capital letter and the
word ‘what’ without a capital letter, then print them again
on the line.

3. You are going to make a ‘What is this?’ book.
4. Turn to page 51. This is the cover of your book.
5. Pick up a pink pencil and carefully underline the word
‘What’ on your cover page.
6. Point to each word as you read the title of your book.
Print your name on the line.
7. Turn to page 52. This is page one of your book.
8. On this page you are going to write your clues. Your clues
will sound something like this. Can you guess what this
is? and this?
It is brown. My family has one.
It eats cheese. It has an engine.
It squeaks. It goes on the road.
What is it? It begins with c.
What is it?
(Yes, it is a mouse.) (Yes, it is a car.)
9. Look at page 53. This is page two of your book. On this
page you will draw your secret picture, the answer to your
clues.
10. Staple the three pages of your book together.
11. Think of the picture you are going to draw on page 2 of
your book. Go to a quiet place and secretly draw your
picture.
12. Now print your clues on page 1 of your book. Think of
the sentence for each clue before you write it.
Remember the capital letters and full stops.
13. When you have finished take your book to your tutor.
Read the cover page to your tutor and then turn to page
1 and read your clues.
14. When your tutor guesses correctly, show your picture.
15. Read your clues to other people and see if they can
guess what your secret picture is.

Note to tutor: Your child is going to make a ‘What is this?’ book.
Carefully read to your child the steps as written on page 49.
Make sure she/he understands what is required.
It would be a good idea to practise making up clues before he/she attempts the book.
Let your child go to a quiet place to make the book.
Accept all effort with interest and praise.
